We all hear horror stories about people loosing
money on bogus sites and I am always cautious when I make a purchase
from any site for the first time.
Generally, I want know who is behind the web
site. In a shop, you can ask someone but on the internet you are
reliant on what they tell you. I don't like that, so I look a bit
deeper and recommend you do too.
Before I buy, I need to build up some trust &
I usually want to know:-
- Is it a UK or foreign web site?
- Is it a sole trader, partnership or a company?
- Will my money be going to a country that I find undesirable?
- Who owns the website and what is their address.
Some of you may not know but you can lookup ANY
web site on the internet and see who owns it and when it was registered
using their web site "Domain" name. This is known as the
"Whois" service and I use Pipex, who own 123-Reg.co.uk
to do this.
If the web site is honest, they will have a full
listing but if there are limited or no details then I think they
are hiding something. There is an "Opt Out" facility to
hide their details but why do this? Sainsbury's or M&S don't
hide their address in the phone book so why do some sites deliberately
hide their details ? I am always VERY skeptical of sites that aren't
fully listed.
Some state they are a registered UK business
but the details suggest otherwise. Although I make many overseas
purchases, I always want to know WHO I am really dealing with and
I probably think you do too.
Go to the 123-reg website and have a look yourself.
You can check us out as well if you wish. We have two domains ukcolloidalsilver.co.uk
& uk-cs.co.uk. The first one shows my IT Company name OS.Net
Interlan as the registrar and is also shown on the logo at the bottom
of each page. In theory, you can go to Companies House web site
and get the company details, which of course is me.
This is only a start in being safe online and
given time, I will add to this section but remember that you don't
get somthing for nothing. Yes you can get bargains but if it looks
too good to be true, then it probably is ! Email is NOT secure and
their email address (Who sent it) can be set to anything. Beware
& be safe but also enjot the internet, its a fascinating place
!
